Is there a function to automatically place activities?

Yes, there are.

With “Time Analysis” function in ACTY'S, based on the information held by the activities, the optimum schedule is calculated automatically to place activities. 

• Based on the Time Now (set the current time on the computer or any date and time), time analysis is performed while considering required Duration for each Task, Constraint (relationships and restrictions between Tasks) and Calendar information, then rearrange Active Bars according to the result.

To complete the project in the shortest possible schedule, Tasks are rearranged by front-loading. 
You can also set "Start as late as possible" option for activities that you do not want to start earlier. 
You can easily adjust your schedule.
